The Donut Fairy Goes To Jail!

apparently the way that God decides to use me typically involves baked goods. and i'm starting to be okay with the thought of being the girl who shares both the love of Christ and high calorie treats with her neighbors.

these past few weeks i've been lending a hand at a ministry called Loaves and Fishes, they serve a hot lunch and give away bagged dinners to the homeless population in Biloxi. i have loved getting to know the staff and regulars there. and i think that God has made his presence felt as i doled out bread and spaghetti , or like this last Wednesday, chocolate cake with chocolate cream filling !When i ran out of cake, i was given an insane amount of donuts to give away. i've never seen more people grin at me than in that hour! as i gave away one of my last packages of goodies and elderly man took my hand and said "God bless you donut fairy!", took his donuts and went on his way.

on Thursday i went to visit some of my Methodist friends. i'm going to start working with them as they are trying to create an ecumenical hospitality center for immigrants to receive help. they are also heavily involved in trying to bring a sense of unity among a non-profits, government agencies (like FEMA), social justice groups and churches. they are serving a group of people who has tripled since Katrina, and unfortunately are regularly taken advantage of and oppressed.
i have the great honor of helping these compassionate-Jesus loving-justice seekers! and i get to use my gifts and talents (i'm not quite sure what those are!)to help them plan events, take on some light casework, and do some of their PR.

i got a jump start on this by accompanying a lawyer, who does some pro-bono work, to the harrison county jail. it was fun! I Know, jails shouldn't be fun...but getting to help him help someone who is suffering the consequences of being a only spanish speaker in an english speaking land, was fun.

the donut fairy went to jail, and left smiling!
